Do you think blogging is like riding a bike? I thought it would be easy to get back into the saddle...but crunch time comes and I am still a little wobbly!

I have had an interesting few years...

If you have been following the journey of docrafts - new brands, new products, new techniques, new direction...then you pretty much have an inkling of how my working days have been spent!

I am incredibly proud of the AWESOME product that my team has delivered. When I first stepped into my role at docrafts, I had my work cut out for me. It was a company with a lot of heart and soul, but very little product expertise or direction. Our most recent launch of Little Venice Cake Company cake decorating equipment in September really was the icing on the cake. You could call it a personal labour of love (and indulgence..)

I have some pretty exciting developments in the pipeline for our Xcut brand... and 2012 is already shaping up to be another exciting year for my team.

BUT - it has not all be fun (you may think I am a good time girl... but there is a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears ;) My dad was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia just before the summer. It floored me. This invincible hero of mine suddenly aged over night, and I had to face the reality that he could die.

My big bro and I developed a crazy concept (when we were holed up in the hospital on a particularly hot Sunday) of taking photos in random places in our KAPOW pose! It instantly became our trademark stance for photos, and we have introduced all of our family and friends to it. We like to think it is worthy of a charitable cause... KAPOW CANCER! (It has a ring?!)

...Just returned from sunny depths of southern France (supplier meeting) and have to say that I fell in love with the scenery! I am a cheese fanatic and love all things smelly and mouldy. N.B. I do however need to quantify that statement, as it certainly DOES NOT apply to my son's feet (or my husband's for that matter ;) Basically - give me some French stinky cheese and some Carrs Cheese Melts, and I am in heaven. Even chocolate comes second *gasp* if I catch a whiff of blue veined cheese...

It was a short trip - but well worth it from a product perspective. I am looking forward to the relaunch in 2010 of an "old favourite" with the help of our new partner... as well as the chance to nip back over next year ;)

I head to Asia at the weekend (...and you wonder why I did not blog for months!) so definitely no rest for the wii-impaired. I think my passport is worn out from the frantic sourcing schedule that comes with the territory - but I just hold out for the trips to SUPERDRY at the airport (it keeps me going ;)

Having finally adjusted the wonky picture above the fireplace, and already knee deep in my abundant crop of pine cones from my leaf-blanketed garden, I am finally feeling more settled into Dorset Life.

I moved due to work demands - but having spent a few weeks breathing the fresh air and rambling through random farm fields and forests, I would quite happily subscribe to this locality through choice.

I had a birthday recently and Rachel Allen Cookbooks (***see pic... no it is NOT me!) were heavily featured. I have her BAKE book (a firm cupboard fav) and the new Rachel's Favourite Food at Home has already got me reaching for the online shop button, ordering chicken to boil up for a homemade pie. I am already feeling virtuous from having reduced my garden-grown cooking apples into sauce for Christmas! The threat of rearing chicken is next...

On the move...

I have finally taken the big leap, and have sold my home in Essex... heading from the bright lights of Bournemouth, the New Forest and DO HQ!

As you can imagine, moving 4 children (schools!!) is no mean feat. House hunting is eating into my relaxing weekends... and I am crossing all fingers and toes that we will find the ideal new location to rehouse all those really useful boxes (!)

Mingled in with the move is obviously the ever expanding product agenda which I manage... and we have new licenses launching, as well as Papermania Signature (a little something *special*) and all our Christmas lines (don't choke - Christmas is pretty much done in my book ;)

As a result I will be taking time out from blogging just so I can catch my breath... and keep sane! A woman's work is never done, and I sure as heck could use a wife round about now... ;)

Bloomin' Hard Work!

Anyone who says that presenting is easy ain't telling the truth! It is bloomin' hard work (...granted not as bad as labour or gallstones; but back to back it is gruelling! I do not know how DB keeps up - and manages to look un-phased by the process ;)

Anyways, it was one heck of a weekend - and I got to meet the Bobbi Brown team, Maxx NY owner and drool up close on those killer handbags, Liz Earle presenter... and Julia Roberts (*highlight*) I am one of those people who DOES get a little star struck - so I had to pull myself together and try not to dribble and speak incoherently...

I have EVERY die cut machine there is on the market... and I have to say that when this little wonder landed on my desk (and got promptly snaffled by Katy Godbeer ;) I wasn't *that* bothered - that is UNTIL she started to hyperventilate and I had to poke my head out of my office to see whether the air vent man was back again...

Apparently sliced bread is *so last year* when you have the new Silhouette SD (from QuicKutz) It basically unlocks your computer and every font and image (scanned in or downloaded from the Internet or from their extensive library - which is an eye-watering wealth of shapes.) NO MORE purchasing expensive cartridges, and being locked into a few size options. This is flippin awesome! MAC compatible, and easy (has to be for me) intuitive software; this is one machine I HAVE TO HAVE (except Katy and our designers have now *baggsy'ed* it...!!)

The library of images and nesting shapes, and dies from QuicKutz (which you get to download for FREE with your subscription card included - has a value of over $2000!!!) Flippin' eck that is a whole load of content to get you going...

FYI: Design Objectives now works exclusively with QuicKutz in the UK - and they launched the SQUEEZE TOOLS in a killer £19.99 deal, and are following up with the new UNIVERSAL EMBOSSING FOLDERS (if you have a Cuttlebug, Revolution, Big Shot... or impress *cough* then these babies are made for you!!) £4.50 for the 4 2x2 versions - which are teeny enough for the Squeeze, or $4.50 for the A2 Embossing Folders...

Lucky for me, the initial stock of the new SILHOUETTE SD arrived yesterday at DO (Clare Curd already bagged one to play with - lucky gal :) so looking forward to getting one of my very own to play with and keep from blogging...

Chocolate Fudge Cake...

Life never stands still!

BUSY does not even come close to describing the product agenda I have been managing at Design Objectives. We have so much launching this year that I barely get time to nibble at a rivita (could be because they taste like core'dinations cardstock) or lick some chocolate fudge cake. Plus there was a whole lot of doom and gloom which I didn't want to get pulled into. Craft is rocking... card making, scrapbooking, jewellery making, knitting, sewing... FYI it is so en vogue to DIY ;)

So issue 3 of Creativity Life is out - and still I get emails from loads of readers who want it more regularly, and better distribution... so next issue we have sorted something out ;) I am loving the look and feel of it - seems to have evolved into quite a neat little bundle. (...and you wonder why I don't get to blog ;)

I have a favour though! I *need* your comments and feedback on the REALLY USEFUL BOX range of products. If anyone out there has ever bought some, please leave comments on WHAT you use them for, and WHY they are good/great/pants!

Lastly, there is a really special TSV airing next Friday (17th April) - might get a giveaway set for one lucky blog follower...

Daisy D's is closing...

Sad news that DAISY D'S is closing by June 2009 - and currently liquidating all stock! Another fatality of the credit crunch... and the vast choice for crafters buying paper!! I love their vintage style... although their last few collections I have been able to live without - but it is still a shame to see these kinds of brands fall under the wheels.

I am sure there is happy news out there! LIKE it being the UK's trade show *Stitches* this weekend. Scaled down from previous years, with some exhibitors electing not to take a booth... still worth a gander if you are a retailer.

Paperworld, Franfurt 2009

Spotted: Trends that seem to dominate state-side are a pish in the ocean when it comes to the mother of all papercraft trade events... Paperworld. It was a massive show that encompassed a variety of stationery, home decor, paper and seasonal decorative crafts. It was a visual banquet...

Trends I spotted included texture. STILL big news - glitter, flock, and velvet effects (huge in home wares and Christmas decor!!) Also there was a really strong representation of natural fibres and colours. Europeans are more proactive in using recycled materials; and there was a real lush hint of raw wood, creative uses of wood pulp and bark. CHA may have dipped its toe in the water of eco-wise... but paperworld was awash with it. Lastly, I noticed that crocodile texture print was adorning everything from notebooks, bags, shoes to your very own handmade paper! Not my *thang* but no doubt we are sure to see it making a big impression in the months to come...

Heading to Frankfurt, Paperworld Show

I am back in the hot seat as I head to the Paperworld trade show in Frankfurt, Germany. It is a 4 day show, and is *even bigger* than CHA (mainly because it is not so paper-centric!) So I have my walking boots, camera, plasters (for those annoying blisters) and some trend spotting antennae...

This is my first encounter of Paperworld; having in the past opted for SMAC & STITCHES as my foray into international trade fairs. I am looking forward to the imperfect booths, cluttered with gazillions of non-coordinated products... all looking for a home. I am brushing up my rusty Deutsche (I went to a German school whilst living in Turkey... so it won't all be Bratwurst and Bahnhof ;)

I will add *little* nick-knacks which I pick up along my way...so that heaving WISH WEDNESDAY WONDER-STASH prize will be awarded on Wednesday week... (as this allows me time to read properly through comments and get over the cumulative jet lag ;) Some lucky follower is going to be like a pig in poo... lucky you!!

CHA Winter 09 - The Finale

Slap my hands... I forgot to mention *ZING* from American Crafts! These are really fine embossing powders that really are scrummy...

So TIM HOLTZ (The Grand Duke of Grunge) has widened his range with Advantus (remember he also has stamps with Stampers Anon, and inky-dinky-do with Ranger... busy bee!) Some interesting nick-knacks... all aged, distressed, grunge type. The mini-stapler tool is a gadget which I have seen Making Memories toy with, and is a revision on the original EKSuccess fastenator. I have heard whisperings of an improved upgraded option out later in the year (but not from any of the brands just named...)

What is some aging embellishments without a centre-piece of grunging cases (which was attracting ALL the attention... ;)

Lastly spotted the man himself showing some retailers around the booth. He finally unshackled himself from that demo spot for some vital pimping. Love his stuff...

Headed over to QuicKutz booth which in 2008 had been a little bit of a disappointment... but they have turned a corner, and suddenly feel back in the design saddle - releasing some fab consumable staples. As DO stockists will be flogging the squeeze and alphas for just £19.99 (you heard it right folks!) in March, the new 2x2 embossing folders will be a real MUST HAVE addition to maximise that bargain buy. With 4 for £4.99 (or thereabouts) I can feel a marriage with some core'dinations coming on...

Also of note were the stunning nesting (aka concentric) stencils, as well as the coordinating dimensional stencils which build a 3D effect. This is a KEY TREND for 2009! I spotted a few companies giving this dimensional effect some limelight through punches (which X-Cut has done in March too) and through this die-cutting. Have to say I was smitten with the floral version.

The new silhouette is sleeker, friendlier and more playful than the previous version. We got a demo, before I left my camera on their stand for half a day - and in a blind panic and hot sweat ran back to see if it was still there... phew, for honest folk!

Lastly... just because it is like butter on a hot potato... the lush Aussie accent from Kaiser Crafts! Worth wading through the whole post for!

CHA Winter 09 - Drama on the dancefloor (outside!)

Just to let you know that this was our brief brush with fresh air before we were whisked back into the dark and frantic world of CHA (...only seconds after being evacuated.) Oh the drama! Paris Hilton didn't even cause this much hoo-haa... ;)

CHA Winter 09 - Day Two...

Clearsnap:
So new colours for their signature queues, petalpoint et al... but the most exciting thing on their stand was their adorable new SMOOCH shimmer inks. They look like nail polish, but are this glorious bling ink that works with a fine brush to nestle into crevices and crannies to create dreamy sheens to pebbles to clay, cards and fabric. VERY VERY yummy...

Lasting Impressions:
I worked with Lasting Impressions before, and just *love* their stencil designs. We do have some in store promos on select demo boards - but here we have some new ones!! As well as all things brass, they have perfected the Memory Mixer to a version 3 reign supremo digital solution. The boys playing with it were hooked... which says it is user friendly ;) Even Holly was all over it - and planning her Wedding Photobook (which this sucker can make in minutes!) Looking forward to seeing more...

Purple Cows:

The recent TSV tool was outshone by the lush icube storage solution on the booth. I instantly fell in love, but only because I can see a whole craft room/kid room/shed organised with this gear! Forget the colouring for a moment, as you wait till you see how light weight it is (urm that is aka cheap shipping for yous and me!!) It is modular, and massively MUST HAVE.

Can't leave CHA without having your picture with a purple cow?!! They were filming the Craft Diva (that TV show) in the background... all good ;)

There was a moment of madness when the alarm went off at CHA and we all have to evacuate. Not able to take anything too seriously (although fire and all that paper product would NOT have been the ideal mix) we did some impromptu videoing...

Please accept my profound apologies for the Michael-taking of the American accent. It was not perfectly executed due to the elevated emotions of the moment ;)

VINYL HOME DECOR

Remember I scoped Uppercase Living last year? Well the scrapbook world is now awash with home decor vinyl applique. Originally Lisa & Becky (Advantus) tried to get us to decorate our walls with hanging things and stickers... then the Cricut (Provocraft) and the Silhouette (QuicKutz) sold vinyl sheets that you could die cut then use to decorate frames, albums, walls et al... and there was at the same time WALLIES (which is a blackboard type vinyl which encourages your kids to "feel free" *which on a sad note my 3 year old daughter DID in my absence on my brand new carpet... joy!!)

Anyways, we now have virtually all the big boys selling finished die-cut phrases and icons to be used to decorate those all-so-bare walls we Brits have a plenty. They LOOK oh so good in the brochure, but not so sure if they will translate onto our teeny walls in our teeny houses...
SPARKLE

If you thought that rhinestones were the epitome of all things glam, then think again. The trend for glitter speciality finishes on patterned paper has flooded scrapbook manufacturers. It is pretty pricey compared to adding your own glitter at home to a sheet of 50p paper - but the effects are less *homemade* and definitely more bam bling. You won't be able to escape this trend, or the cash it will take out of your pocket to feed the habit!
COST CUTTING

Saving the planet was firm on the agenda, but only after saving the pounds in your pocket first. Thus the advent of 99p-esk stamps popping up all over the show (We R Memory Keepers have some cute ones to match that Tiffany line... which is a wowzer one irl!) BUT pack sizes are also reducing, so retailers can buy more breadth, and less depth. With GCD Studios also getting really cost sensitive when it comes to their deliciously designer papers and accessories. The credit crunch is hitting... big time!

I did nip into the TWO PEAS IN A BUCKET cupcake party (Kirsty, Shimelle, Marion and Bev were there also from the UK) and we had a hoot with tsome american lasses on our table. Whilst they were 2 pea buffs, Holly & I were struggling to answer the simplest of quiz questions... although weirdly on my turn I ended up winning a new fiskars trimmer due to my acute knowledge of album manufacturers (aka guess work!?!)

My ill gotten gain will be added to the WISH WEDNESDAY STASH PILE... which is mounting up nicely! There are wallies, t-shirts, a cute Doodlebug shoulder tote and more... for that one lucky follower. xxxx

CHA Winter 09 - Day One...

Spotted: Key trends which are gaining pace in the scrapbook world en mass include

1. The "rhinestone revival":

{Everyone} is doing it... from combo rub-ons with bling (a la Imaginisce, BasicGrey, Kaiser Craft etc) to just plain studded shiny (and pearl) stuff (again, a la BasicGrey, Kaiser Craft, K&Co, Doodlebug, Imaginisce et al...) It seems no collection is complete without the bling factor! You will be inundated, so hold onto your wallets...

Other trends spotted include:

2. JEWELLERY:

EKSuccess have ploughed into this category with the launch of their Jolee's line of findings and jewellery making components. It is a beautifully packaging and presented range which is already spotted in Michael's stores (alongside their adorably chic Martha Stewart line.) There is so many vendors now coming to the fore, with a jewellery offering, that this category is just hotting up. From cheap plastic bits to full scale quality semi-precious... you are going to be spoilt for choice (and hard pushed to not at least try it just *once* ;) The feel of jewellery is definitely younger, and definitely more DIY accessory (think how the recession will entice those thrifty crafters to make their own... rather than pay top/mod dollar for the same effect!!)

3. MINI-ME CLEAR STAMPS:

Clear Stamps is not new news (this grew big time in 2008) - but the trend is now to mini stamp sets and smaller price points. Everyone (maybe bar Fancy Pants) is going teeny... and trying to pick at the pocket money purchase - those impulse buys, the ones that fly under the radar of spouse approval ;)

4. FAST:

Autumn Leaves are not the only company to come up with 2 minute scrapbooking... but they are the first to really package it well with a time guarantee as part of the product title. You can select how much time you want to spend; and then be productive to deadline. HOTP championed this cause for much of 2007-2008, but Autumn Leaves has stamped the *cool factor* all over it!

5. ECO-FRIENDLY:

Forced upon the industry, or volunteered... we now have a green agenda and we are seeing some inventive interpretations. My fav is K&Co (as their packaging is fabulous) and they still feel oh so sophisticated along with that environmentally feel-good factor.

6. FLOURISH:

Swirls, scrolls and flourishes are flouncing their way into every designer range - whether wood, stamps, paper, emboss templates... you name it, there is a curly wurly swirly option. Loveable and pretty much a staple diet in craft - you can expect the flourish to be a firm fav in 2009.

I have the most delicious goodies already... including an artylicious flocked storage 12x12 box with samples which includes a cute PURSE BOOK from the new *fabulous* (that is what it is called ;) range from Chatterbox. Worthy of raised eyebrows and pulse racing... AS WELL as samples from Hello Kitty (Sizzix/Ellison) x 4 dies, Clear Stamps, Modge Podge T-Shirt, Spellbinders concentric scalloped circles, Mambi Sticker, this wierd bag with a monkey leg (which looks like a tail...) all very bizarre... and it is growing for ONE LUCKY follower!

We had such a great response to our staggered shipping program at CHA last July that we decided to do it again! CHA Winter 09 - BAD new for Scenic Route fans...

Email received today, "Scenic Route has determined this week that they officially will not have a booth at CHA and feels that given the current economic climate within the industry that it is best to release a new line and offer a discount on the new release to customers as an alternative to having a booth at the show. Scenic Route will begin taking pre-orders on the new release next week, with an anticipated ship date of mid-February. Next week you will receive information from Scenic Route on the new release including images, sku's and pricing. "

I *love* Scenic Route - so really hope they weather the storm!

Tony Hart has died at the age of 83... leaving many of us with fond memories of THE GALLERY (the ultimate showcase for wannabe artists... from the age of 3 onwards ;) That dulcet tune that would play in the background as the camera scrolled through the week's lucky entries - and you KNEW yours would not be there... as it was still sitting on your bedroom dresser. If you had used chalk smudges, and that awful charcoal substance - then you were a shu-in to be picked... So long, farewell... Mr Hart. Long live Morph!

Off to Athens...

You would think with CHA just around the corner that I would have better things to do - but who would pass up the chance to kick off the launch of COUSIN jewellery in Athens?! Not the most logic location - but I am in jewellery heaven (and it is raining!!)

Lots going on in the scrapbook world - with SIMPLE SCRAPBOOKS (by CK Media) being closed down "There simply isn't enough advertising to keep two magazines afloat. The economic situation has been difficult to say the leastand we've all been feeling it, no matter what area of the country we live in, or what industry we work in. I'm sure you can relate. Tough times. Tough measures."... and Fiskars announcing the cease of production of papers, stickers etc for Heidi Grace, Lil Davis etc. The plot thickens as we will see a real interesting CHA show. Ups and downs all around. On a positive Tinkering Ink became part of CreativityInc. (the same company who brings us Autumn Leaves, Blue Moon Beads, Westrim etc.) So some you win, some you lose. Big losses here with Craft Central going into administration... but again on the flip side we will see the locations find new ownership; so all is not as gloomy as it seems!

I remember this time last year, and I was not in a particularly great place (work wise) - so looking back at 2008, I can count my blessings... and see that some hard (and not always popular) decisions paid off.

TWILIGHT....confession

I was not shy in coming forward when it came to my feelings on the dreadful novel that is TWILIGHT... and I resisted peer pressure from loads of friends who read it, and went on to devour the entire series.

BUT I have a confession.

I was coerced into a girls night out to the cinema to see Twilight. AND because it WAS a *girls night out* and there was going to be food involved afterwards, I conceded and went along for the cringe-worthy ride of my life.
OK there were some real LAUGH OUT LOUD *naff acting* bits... but sadly by the end of it (actually somewhere near the whole colliding car/heavy breathing part) I was mesmerised by those eyes. Admittedly I felt a little pervy for liking a 17 year old (...but is it any better if he has been 17 for like... eeeeoooooons?!)

There are some products that hit the headlines before their time - and it is worth bringing them back...

Take the QuicKutz clear rockers. Unlike other rocking blocks, they are completely see-through, and don't require a dousing of water to make the clear stamps stick to them ;) They sort of made a pebble *ploush* in the pond of scrapbook products - without causing a ripple... which is a HUGE travesty, as they are kick-ass product. So simple, so useful... and so affordable! No need to dish out your hard earned dosh to get your hands on these babies. Come March '09 you will be revelling in these beauties at rock bottom prices. Just a prediction ;)

Happy New Year!

My Christmas Tree has finally found it's annual resting place, and the lights are all tucked away for another year. I have to say that I ate more than I should have... happily so; and conquered Professor Layton (much to the chagrin of my oldest... whose DS game it was from Santa ;)

I enjoyed thoroughly the break... and even the one hour stint on QVC. I am back on the 20th Jan with a very cool TSV. Had I of known that I would be up at midnight launching it, I may have been a little less excited. Me and my sleep go WAAAYYYYY back ;)

I avoided all gifts crafty this Christmas - although was showered with culinary books and gadgets. LOVE EM ALL. I baked until I smelt more of pastry and and stuffing than my fav Victoria Secret Pear Glaze... and I now am the proud owner of more Denby Pottery for all that entertaining I do ;) I la la la'd to Take That, Keane and James Morrison. I have to day that Keane is my absolute fav. There is just something about his voice...

So...back to work next week - and a crazy January to look forward to! There are more trade shows than you can shake a stick at. Globe hoping to the USA and Europe, as well as fitting in a fleeting visit to Athens (have the riots stopped yet?!!) Mix into a full day at QVC, a Wedding Anniversary, my son's 11th and my daughter's 3rd birthday... and well, you get the picture!

I have been hit by the Christmas magic. You know when you *think* you will have enough time to do everything on your never ending list - but then end up waking in a cold sweat, panicking that there is someone you have forgotten to buy for, and that you have run out of wrapping paper, mincemeat and the will to endure another week of jingle bells... WHERE does December go?!!

The best thing for UK Scrapbooking?

If you have been following the dollar exchange rate... you will be as glum as me {no big spending planned for spare time at the CHA Winter show!} We are around 1.4 (from over x2 earlier in the year) and with the credit crunch, it looks like all those inviting cross-continental purchases will have to be put on hold... it has been the death-knell for all those irresistible half-price bargains!

BUT the exchange rate annihilation could spell the *best* news for Scrapbooking in the UK. For years die-hards and bargain hunters have been browsing the Internet for better deals from our US cousins, and even with added shipping... making a saving on buying on home soil. UK retailers have been bereft at the lack of loyalty - and there have been a few "Buy British" campaigns... but that juicy half price mentality has tempted ££££ being spent elsewhere.

Now the exchange rate is less attractive, retailers will find those same savvy bargain hunters now scouring the net for best prices, best deals and CHOICE. It is a huge opportunity for UK scrap suppliers to step up to the plate and win market share... so it isn't all doom and gloom!

So some homegrown Monday Money Saving Tips:

Artbase have a wide variety of products online - so if you are looking for CHOICE they are a fav!

One less thing to worry about - as the Turkey is now taken care of... and I am already mulling my Turkey Brine (more delicious details to follow!!) So nip online and book yourself a slot, so the hassle factor is removed - well at least for some of Christmas!

I just got a sneak peak at the one of the new ad's hot off the marketing press, for the new January lines from Papermania...

This range was designed by a UK designer... not sure if she wants to be named (she may be shy ;) but this is bursting with lilac and lavendar with smatterings of apple green. Very cute range... retro chic!

Christmas Stocking Fillers...

I have made my list, and passed it (as a dutiful wife) to my husband - to alleviate his anxiety on what to buy for me. I think it is the caring thing to do... put them out of their misery ;)

Here are my crafty must haves (and I would love to hear what you are wishing for... as you never know... sometimes you get what you wish for!)

STORAGE.
As far as I am concerned this is my number one ask. I need more *really useful boxes* than you can shake a fist at, to organise my newly acquired jewellery interest (more on that next year!!) as well as to get me organised for smarter crafting. I am a sucker when it comes to those plastic boxes with the blue handles - and Mr Really Useful is going to be really happy with my list of must haves! Not sure if they will fit in my stocking... but that is why we have pillow cases ;)
PENS.
I adore a good writing pen - and have a whole list of American Craft pens on my most wanted. I love the slick writers, and the galaxy markers... and so have a little space created for my anticipated pen hoard...
CAMERA LENS.
This is a big ask - and definitely not on a stocking filler list. Whether I get it or not, I still lust after a nice canon lens that I have been dreaming about for 6 months. I am not as hard core into photography as Katy G... but I still feel like I deserve some pucker piece of camera kit!
CARD BLANKS.
I have just (after almost a year working with Design Objectives) converted to being a card maker. So now I don't want to hack up my textured cardstock (I am saving that for scrapbook pages) I *need* card blanks to give me a quick base to get those zillion of family cards pre-made for the year... I may even start sending cards with those Wednesday Wish Winner parcels (but don't hold your breath ;)

{Health Warning: Not for those readers with a weak constitution...}

I am flogging myself for not blogging so far this week... I have a STINKING COLD. I dare say it is as close to "Man Flu" as a woman can legitimately get. It has knocked me for six, and my nose is literally {and this is gross detail} peeling red raw from the amount of blowing... I am not one to lay in bed suffering - I prefer to get out of bed and share the suffering with everyone... share the love, the snot and the scrunched up bits of tissues. Very pleasant ;)

It has spurred me to bake my Christmas Cake (a tradition I started when in labour with my number 2 son who just celebrated his birthday.) My grandmother always arrived with her Christmas Cake in all it's *rock hard icing* glory. It was one of my favourite traditions... the first slice always going to the big cheese (Father Christmas) on Christmas Eve...!! So I dived into Nigella's Christmas and have baked both her traditional and that *to die for* fruit cake. I will let you know which one rocks my boat... as I am probably going to eat the whole cake, as my ungrateful family do not share my love of all things Christmas pud, cake and raisin laden.... (granted there ARE prunes in one of these ;)

Spotted: Glitz release sneaks of their new ranges for Jan 09 (and there are LOADS... maybe too many to choose from!!) I like the strong teen male line - not that I have teenagers {yet} but I do have growing boys who need their own colour palette. Not every paper needs to be pink!

N.B. I think the industry needs to SLOW down with all the paper - and concentrate on a select few GREAT designs... rather than throwing too much at consumers who will still only select one or two to buy.

This group of exhibitors represents over 15% of the anticipated 750 exhibitors which will be showcasing thousands of new products to 15,000 attendees from around the world.

Among the manufacturers to be featured in the New Exhibitors Show section is Ribbon Connections Inc, booth number 2710. In keeping with the Show’s green theme, the company will introduce ribbons and accessories made of 100% natural materials at the Winter Show. The ALDI effect...

I don't know if anyone caught the programme last night that reported a surge in interest in DISCOUNT stores like ALDI & Lidl. Pundits are calling it the *Aldi Effect*... where consumers are trading down and saving money on their essentials. Aldi apparently promote quality produce at 30% cheaper prices - and 30% is a BIG DEAL.

I have been watching as retailers in the craft industry work to reposition their businesses in the current *pinch* climate. Mad About Cards have a £1 section of their website - and their business is booming. Artymiss specialise in cut price bundle deals... and more and more retailers are switching on to a selection of quality essentials at credit crunching pricing.

Design Objectives just launched a massive deal to support their retailers hit this market demand with loads of £3-4 items now retailing at just a mere 99p. I am pretty sure retailers can use all the support they can get right now (and it is only good news for consumers who are watching the pennies... and can now craft for just a few pounds!)

Cute and adorable must-have mini Core'dinations 6x6 Black Magic... If you have *yet* to convert to Core'dinations, let me tell you why you *need* to try it! You could use it as plain old black cardstock with a hint of a shimmer... OR you could unleash the beast and toy with it to create pretty pucka background effects. I spotted this <<< on scrappindipity.com.au and love the effect!

You can sand over embossed (raised) designs to reveal the coloured core - or you can take yourself back to days of yore and relive those *brass rubbing* days to create a rubbing of whatever it is you have to hand. You can create some pretty funky bespoke backgrounds this way...

Spotted: The subtly lush Arctic Chill line from Fancy Pants. For card makers the window of sale opportunity has past - but for those of us still to take our Christmas pics... then this might be the perfect paper.
Argyle seems to be making a big imprint on this range - and is ideal if you have those socks which your gran still insists on buying. I think I like Fancy Pants because they package so beautifully. Some of the papers aren't Oscar winning... but altogether it looks like a three course scrapbook meal.

Also spotted - a new designer has signed up to work exclsuively for Papermania in the UK! She is design royalty in the US... so lots of beans to spill!! I know next year will all be about new names (or even household ones) brought to you via crafting... NAMES are HUGE in 2009! Think Kate Moss teaming up with Top Shop (except the clothes will fit you...)

Not that size means anything, but it looks like bankruptcy beckons... and the downturn in the market (as well as sizable competition) only nailed the coffin. An attempt to restructure has been announced - but it is only an indicator of the current market trends. You need to be Noah to survive this flood...

This week has been mad...

TV tripe is viewing bread and butter. I watch those TV programmes where the passengers miss their plane, and rolled my eyes at the cliche. THEN... I arrive at Athens airport on Tuesday as my plane flies into the clouds - and realise that the naff reality is exactly how it is portrayed on TV.

THAT was the beginning of my week. We had to wait 7 hours in the airport, pay for a new flight which landed at the WRONG airport... then drive to Gatwick to pick up the car, then drive back. It made for an interesting "we'll laugh about it one day" beginning to my week... Hence the lack of Wednesday Wishes... just call me Ebenezer; *bah humbug*!

THEN I hear that my little sister is staring in a film in a scene with DEMI MOORE!! She blagged her way onto the set (they are filming in her suburban neighbourhood in the US ;) and somehow wangled accidentally to become one half of a couple who Demi chats to... surreal or what?? Needless to say that the film may be a pile of poo - but I shall be lining up to watch and buy it as a family heirloom.

So I am ready to grant a wish to the lovely Dental Nurse SARAH (follower and commenter ;) We R Memory Keepers goodies are all yours! CONGRATULATIONS. Just email me your address.

Online inspiration... budge over printed mags!

The trend is definitely not a new one... with the likes of docrafts.co.uk focus on "projects, projects, projects" attracting approx 225,000 crafters (they identified the opportunity early...) SO with craftbubble.com's launch (see yesterday's post) as well as fiskars.com launching their own e-cards...both promoting their online inspiration - do we really still love to sit down with a printed magazine?

Digital Scrapbooking (US publication) seems to think not, as it closed it's doors and went whole heartedly online only (click link for online issue: LINK.) Not the first mag to bite the dust on newsstand shelves, but definitely not the last. Both Scrapbook & Cards and Craft Life & Home both launched as dual purpose publications... serving the instant fix online and then delivering a hand held hunk of love to leaf through.

Interestingly no-one really gets excited about downloadable magazines. There is something a little remote about them, that leaves us tactical crafters wanting... We are after all in the business of touching and feeling. We may shop online in our millions - but we still get a little giddy when we walk into a craft shop. In this heightened state of euphoria sniffing paper is certainly permissible...

Already the new price point for Creativity Life (now only a credit busting £2) is proving that crafters desire a little touchy feely indulgence to flick through... BUT we fickle fashionetas are STILL looking for a quick fix online to stave off scrappers block. We want the best of both worlds (what woman doesn't?!!) and lucky for us, someone is out to deliver whatever we wish for...

So whizz around the online world of inspiration, then grab a mug on the sofa and cuddle up with a great magazine. The perfect chilly Thursday therapy.

Members will be able to create their own unique profile or ‘craft bubble’, upload and share projects in their own gallery, make new friends, create and join groups, blog, share tips and advice, and more.

The website will offer cross-platform packages to advertisers across craftbubble.com and Origin’s craft magazine and digital portfolio. The site will eventually look to offer advertisers the ability to tailor their messages to specific user interests.

Crafters will be able to pre-register for the site as from today at http://register.craftbubble.com/index.php?do=/signup/ and gain full access as from tomorrow, Thursday 13th November. Membership is free and all new members will receive three free craft projects to download.

Monday Money Saving Bargains...

Apparently the high street is bucking the trend when it comes to money spent in store. It seems we are less apt to pay online, and would rather rummage around the aisles picking up a bargain in person...

If you have Christmas on the brain, then toys are on offer EVERYWHERE - from Woolworths, ToysRus to Tesco, Asdas and Argos... toys are half price, 3for2 or 25% off. BUT research by TRB shows that we are spending more per purchase - but making less purchases! So we are opting for quality over quantity ;)

Spotted: American Crafts gets hip... well for the teens at least. If you have spotty somethings - or have a panache for bam pop'esk pinks and retro prints, then this range will hit all the right notes.

Spotted: Cosmo Cricket launch their Valentines *Chemistry* line... if you like HEARTS then this is nirvana. If you think love is overrated - then pass the bucket and avert your eyes ;)

Spotted: Jenni Bowlin have line extended their fab blacks and reds... so new papers and die cuts to tempt and toy with. I love her style - very vintage chic... classy, and timeless. She is the perennial journal junkie - and I adore pretty much everything she does!!

Happy Halloween

Peeuw... the inside of pumpkins stink!

Half Term... and I am surely in good company with every other parent in the country who is counting down the hours until Monday morning ;) I shouldn't complain, as I have been super indulgent with my family time, and today we went *all out* on the pumpkin carving.

Sometimes you just need to put the camera down and get your fingers dirty!! Pumpkin flesh ingrained in your nails is the ideal reminder that being a mother is not for the faint hearted (esp. during the toilet training years ;)

Spotted: New lines from Making Memories. Love the detail on their ribbon sliders... and the new tickets (very Jenni Bowlin!!) Flower Patch is very pastel, and appeals to my lighter side. It also has a hot trend that will explode into the scrapbooking market in 09 - Butterflies. We have had our owls and birds... and now it is time for the wee little insects with wings. They already hold their own in the card market in the UK... but watch how they muscle in on the limelight in the scrap scene.

In the salon with Alison

I was sat RIGHT BEHIND Alison (who had a table full of Philosophy... which wafted over and smelt d-vine ;) My camera was no where in sight... as has been the case for the entire day at QVC. I could have bumped into Paul McKenna and never been able to blog about it... *gasp* (Please note this DID NOT happen... although I did say hi to the coat man, and the gorgeous gal who came all the way down from Manchester to demo the jewellery cases for 7 minutes - talk about dedication.)

So I was nervous... but Anthony was a superstar. Very nice to work with (I took my heels off so he could be taller than me ;) I loved all the callers - I just wish I knew for certain that the camera I was looking at was INDEED the camera that was "live". So many lessons learnt!! Back again on the 22nd December (which is also the same day as another Papermania hour!!) I had more samples - but they all arrived too late... sod's law :( More new brands and new products next show...

I have been going to bed at 8pm, as I am still on crazy body timing... but I have pressies to wrap tonight, and spooks to catch up with. Sorry about saying SNOT. There has to be a better word for that sticky effect... but snot was all that I could muster under pressure. NOT as bad as a word that the elfin presenter with the face products (Bo-something or other) used. She meant to say SEBUM... and I will leave you to imagine what she actually DID say.

Jet Lag and QVC Countdown...

I am in that thick *fug* they call Jet Lag... where you feel like there is a time delay in your brain, the world is spinning, and everyone seems to be talking a little too loud and fast. The extra hour in bed was redundant, as I was awake and ticking from the wee small hours. Despite it all, it is GOOD to be home!

So the countdown - less than 24 hours, and it is QVC pour moi. Am I nervous? Heck yes... who wouldn't be?! I have some really gorgeous kits... all designer labels ;) I have a list as long as my arm of friends I would love to say hello to (so if I don't get a chance I am thinking of you all!) We also have 5 copies of the brand new issue of Creativity Life (signed by myself and Anthony Heywood) to giveaway to callers... so if you want a FREE copy be sure to phone ;)

Shanghai

I have photos on Holly's camera of the BUND (this is the famous Shanghai district) and will have to upload them later. We had a night out with our office colleagues here, and boy was that fun. You have to experience Shanghai from a local perspective to really get a flavour. (My fav place is still Hong Kong!!) I leave tomorrow for home (hurray!!) and am looking forward to my bed, my pillow... and my family ;)

Trends for 2009

You can actually spot trends at this show - not just in the craft industry, but in homeware, technology et al. Looking around Hong Kong and I spotted the enviable Ipod Karaoke... who would not want a machine that you could belt a tune along with? It is going to be the *next* wave of docking station upgrades. Also spotted more technical gadgets in the kitchen... simple tools get a modern twist for convenience and time saving (sound familiar?)

There were some delicious white porcelain table wear... and really cute cake stands (I am a sucker for a cute cake stand!!) Plenty of Christmas 09 decor (lots of traditional Santa's and Snowmen.) It was like a winter wonderland - except the sun was blazing outside ;) Some brilliant packaging ideas... and toys (my kids would have a field day!!)

A few crafty trends I spotted do involve creative use of the crochet trend which is going to be hot next Spring/Summer. Layers, more layers, and even more layers... and speciality finishes (lazer-cut, die-cut, foil, flock and this hybrid glitter epoxy embossing finish - which I think is going to be big news in 09...)

Shanghai has a different feel to Hong Kong... not so hot, incredibly busy (near death taxi experiences) but very interesting. xxx

Day Four...

It is a little unreal to be in Hong Kong. My parents have visited here before - and I have seen the pictures, but it is something totally different to visit it for yourself! I managed to bump into some familiar faces at the show we are attending, which was a miracle in itself as the place is HUGE!!

We head to Shanghai tonight, and then it is into REAL China (Hong Kong is pretty 5-Star.) My credit card has dust accumulating, as there is absolutely no time to shop (...CHA means it takes a real beating, which is why I love going to the US ;)

Hello to my kiddies - who I am missing A LOT. When you are away you actually miss HUGGING. I am not about to hug Hols and TB... and am looking forward to getting home, to my own bed and my own family.

Just discovered too that Anthony Heywood is the QVC personality who will be hanging out with me for 2 hours on the 28th (4-6pm show)... so should be fun!!

I spotted this cow and fell in love with it.

Not that I am about to leave my husband or anything for a foam cow... but it's big googly eyes were dead cute, and I could not resist.

A bloke made this - and I said that in his honour I would post his grand achievement publicly... as he was dead proud about his *I CAN craft* fuzzy warm feeling.

Today was spent out of the sunshine in offices and meetings. It is what I am here to do I guess, so can't complain. I did manage to pep the proceedings up with off-key karaoke in the car, as well as a night at TGI Fridays with Benji (superstar)... I now have belly-ache from laughing and a doggy bag crammed full of brownie {as promised} for Holly.

Day One...

It is HOT out here... like sizzling (which would be OK if I was on a beach somewhere in less than the business attire I have ;) We caught the High Speed Rail to different areas of the island... and got to see some great new product ideas which we are developing. Think, hybrid textures ;) Also spotted some fab ideas for gifts.... just you wait!!

I am NOT adventurous with my cuisine at all (stems from days living in Turkey being fed who knows what... scarred my tongue for life!) I however had my first scallop tonight, and Holly (Roche) ate a SNAIL!! This is not the grossest food I bet we can eat... but for me that was pushing *it*. Good food, great company (with our Taiwan Ma Ma *waves* to Brad and the gang!!)

Finally got a shot of the 101 at night. Very pretty. Lots of crazy cyclists on the roads - and I would not like to be behind the wheel here.

Taipei

It is a little surreal to be in a place that I have only ever seen on TV. Although I am a far cry from travel superhero Michael Palin...

Taipei is a bustling city (seriously... no one seems to sleep here!) The people are warm and welcoming. We drove past Taipei 101 (the second largest building in the world) and headed to our hotel. I don't eat airplane food since my unfortunate *puking* experiences (is that too much info?!!) So I was starving, and have to confess that the KFC across the road was shouting at me. I think it is safety in familiarity (plus I *knew* for sure it wasn't dog food... literally ;)

After bod all sleep (roughly 2 hours) it is on the road to visit factories - we get on the SUPER FAST train (it's like the Japanese Bullet) in an hour or so... so I better get dressed!

Ministry of Pastry & Pumpkin...

Here is the scoop on me:

When I do something, or want to do something... I pretty much go all out. My husband jokes that I am *crazy* (or at least I think it is a joke ;) because I think about doing something, and then within hours I am making it happen. Take COOK CLUB. It was an idea me and my mates had banded around (as we are all appalling and cook the same-ol same-ol meals each and every day...) So we just DID IT... got together and started from scratch. We swapped dinner time meal ideas, and then started learning some basic skills that we are all *lacking*.

For me it was pastry. It always fills me with dread, as the goo gets under your nails and in your ring crevices... and it ends up tasting YACK. So determined (and armed with an excellent US pastry recipe book) we conquered within 5 mins the ins and outs of great (really flaky yummy) pastry.

The key? The right ingredients - TREX is a must! As well as whacking it all in the food mixer *gasp* and not touching one slimey nodule until it is ready to be rounded and rolled. Leave in the fridge... and then you have the base to your very own PUMPKIN PIE!

We did *try* and cheat on the pumpkin pie filling - but in the end no Libby's canned pumpkin could be found, and we discovered the art of creating our very own puree from culinary (weenie) pumpkins. Does it all sound like a lot of faff - heck no?! If I can juggle this all with prep for QVC, prep for an intercontinental trip... and kids wanted to get stuck in... then I reckon anyone can do it! Recipes available on request (I have them in PDF format!)

I am not an especially good flyer... I hate the smell of airplane food, and I get those white knuckles when gripping tightly during take off and landing... so the next 24 hours is going to be a roller coaster ;)

CROCHETING

Do not laugh or mock.... as CROCHETING is going to be big!

From the fashion catwalk (dresses, tights, tops, bags et al) to crochet jewellery... yep, you read right, that is crocheting with metal. Crocheted beads, earrings, necklaces and little hanging things (that is a technical term ;) Spring 09 will see this key trend in all the fashion rags, taunting us with their sexy little loops... and tempting us with their elegant detail.

So how will this translate into crafting with paper? Well, see those die cut sheets of paper (KI Memories released some a while back) - well they are the scrapbooker's crocheted paper! We are sure to see a surge in interest in the minute paper cutting... detail is king!

Serious CAMERA STRAP

Heroes is back... Grey's Anatomy is back... therefore my resolve is shot; my weakness for zoning out and getting sucked in (rather than adding finishing touches to all the QVC samples) has been totally indulged.
As I am working at the other side of the world from Wednesday (so a few delays can be expected.... ;) I have so much to fit into the weekend - but somehow it all got shelved as I logged onto VIDEOSTIC and tuned into my fav US TV. Loads to choose from, so follow the link and waste some time today ;)

Spotted: SEI & Sassa Christmas 08

Spotted: Alpine Frost is the Christmas 08 line from SEI. This could not be further afield from Sassafras - as it is Christmas "all grown up". It is the colours of a skiing trip in the Alps (I am guessing the name hints overtly at this too ;) and it is more about WINTER than it is about the usual Christmas icons.
Seeing as though I rarely see a spot of snow (what is it with the UK and seasons being out of whack?!!) I am not sure that this one is as applicable... although it is divinely designed to work beyond the weather and create some classy projects!

Spotted: The cute-some offering from Sassafras... Life at the Pole is uber delicious with its perfect little gingerbread men and candy canes. Rather than blowing your eyes out with larger than life colour, it gets away with all the *cutesy* because it has softer tones reminiscent of Christmas's past. I love it. My kids would love it... and I am pretty sure the cute n cuddly followers will be queuing up for a slice of the action.

Spotted: Upsy Daisy have launched 2 new collections for Christmas. The first is Hot Chocolate and it is a playful, colorful winter line with lots of great patterns that give a new twist to your creations. The second line is titled Spirit and it is a classic line using brown, cranberry, and green for the colors. There are papers with angels and trains and they all have an elegant seasonal feel to them.

Cute & Cuddly... Trend

Forever Friends has been hitting the headlines in the craft world. It seems that card makers especially cannot get enough of "cute n cuddly". I was chatting to Hallmark this last week, and we are definitely a nation of two halves. Cute being one of them! 74% of us recognise Forever Friends as a brand, and it has been establishing its brand in our Psyche for 21 years... no small feat for a tubby beige bear.

As a trend, this probably transcends seasonality... and becomes staple fodder for that insatiable appetite for cute n cuddly.

I have to admit that I am more heavily soaked (marinated) in cute since having 2 little girls. They seem to bring out the *fluffy* side of me. I even have ordered some of these bears (watch out for them on sale in craft stores!!!) as Christmas pressies... just could not resist ;)

So trends 2009 is going to have CUTE N CUDDLY as a must-have... even if it is no-where near the fashion catwalks of CHA, it will be dominating the craft industry in the UK. You just have to look to Joanna Sheen, and also the new Daisy & Dandelion (to be unveiled 09) brand...!! You have been warned ;)
