Eat Cake

Our new book club book is perfectly portioned for my kind of reading... EAT CAKE by Jeanne Ray. Totally a summer slice of nothing special... no tears or dead intense scenarios (unless you count the awkward moment of nearly helping her incapacitated dad to pee...) just a cupcake of a story. Cake (look away now as I am going to spoil the storyline) is basically the "cure all" for everyday malady. Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with the eating of cake, I am aghast that the baking of it is therapy beyond consumption...

48 hours...

I was given this book last week, and was not too sure about it when the back cover said *erotic love*... I am not a Mills n Boons type of gal.

I urmmmmed a lot, then started to look at a few pages and found that the topic (FOOT BINDING) was actually incredibly absorbing. Having googled images and read a lot on the topic, this book was quoted often, so I figured I would give it the benefit of the doubt.

I am *really* glad that I did not judge the book by the cover (the old adage is true...) - as it was a beautiful story of friendship between women, sad and honest. It was an insightful commentary on women, not just in that culture, but in any...

The whole foot binding thing is AMAZING to try to comprehend. The things we do for 'beauty' - makes me not so shameful of the Britney moment I had earlier. I read the book in 48 hours (lots of train travel time made me finish it!) I would recommend it - even with the little intimations, and the references to marriage duties (you know the ones ;)

Shhhh!

Stonking headache after a whirlwind trip down to Bournemouth and back... BUT I did get to play with some new toys. I like toys - heck, I would say that I feel a little deserving when it comes to gadget geek inventions that bring us on par with the boys. Not that I am keeping score ;)

It is official! DO are now exclusively distributing the Cropadile and Big Bite... as well as other We R Memory Keepers lines. Product won't be available immediately; but you know what they say - watch this space ;)

Last note before I sink into a LUSH bath bombed bath... Eyes; the window to the soul. Here is one man that has touched my life - been a very level head and heart... and no blood relation. Those twinkling eyes and wrinkles say volumes about a life laughed and lived. I hope that when I am his age that I will have a legacy as great as his. It's what is it all about folks... you get one crack at life - and this is it! Let's get writing, scrapping, living and loving... (oh and ladies, you have to read that Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands book... it will alter your perspective ;) I say this as the boys will be too scared to recommend it to you - for fear of reprisals... hahahaa you know I am right!

The Reading Trend

So I am in this book club.

The oldest member is probably late 60s - and the youngest is early 20s (I am somewhere in between ;) The more I talk to random people that I meet or work with, the more I am finding that BOOK CLUBS are back en Vogue. Looking for an interesting trend in 2008... then debate the resurgence back into the age old art of reading for pleasure...

Hopping onto GOOD READS (which is seriously the place to be if you are interested in the written word...) would you believe that I spotted: Shimelle (one of those random links; looks like I am in good company!)

If you think about it - cooking, crafting, reading... they are all the same. It is like we are returning to indulging in those personal pleasures that add value to our lives, and create a tangible result of time well spent. I may have just hashed together a pasta dish unfit for human consumption (*I will have to make up with a killer desert*) - but I have just finished a book that is next on the club list...

More Later,

Book Worm

I was handed a book for the Book Club I attend each month... as I am part of the reconnaissance group that pre-reads books to check out their worthiness. It was a funny title, and had it not been a really good friend that handed it me - I may have chucked the book at her; and then worried that DH had masterminded the selection...

So THE PROPER CARE & FEEDING OF HUSBANDS is now my evening companion. It starts off a little scary - like the author is going to tell me to pull a finger out, and start being more domesticated to increase my husband's comfort... but then it continues in the same vein and I start mentally listing all my deficiencies. The list is long.
However, I was relieved to find that Stacey Julian (Simple Scrapbooks) had read and recommended it... not that I need her approval - but at least I am curious to keep going to the end! Isn't it nuts that as women we create this mammoth mountain of check lists, 'to be' goals, diary dates and chocka schedules - and really the folks that come off worst are the ones we kinda promised to look after the most. I like the analogy of clearing your plate of some of the junk to make room for the good stuff. As soon as we start talking about plates, and the good stuff... I am all ears (it hits all the right notes for me!)
Let me know if anyone has read it - and whether it is going to change my life (or at least my cooking patterns...)
